Hi. My name is Beverley and I work at West Coast Institute (WCI), a tertiary educational facility servicing the northern suburbs of Perth, the capital of Western Australia.
I teach in the Business division. My students are from a diverse range of backgrounds and ages, but many are under 20.
Hi Beverly,
ReplyDeletealmost al of our students are under 20. Most of them between 16-19. Is it a big difference in how you planing your teaching depending on the age of the students?

Hi Beverley!
ReplyDeleteWhat great school to work on a pond or lake right next to it. How many students are in each class? What are your terms on the school year? In Sweden we have two semesters with the fall semester starts in August and ends just at Christmas. Spring semester starts in early January and ends in mid-June. Students in Sweden 10 weeks summer holidays.
Best regards,
Gunbritt
Hi Anneli and Gunbritt
ReplyDeleteBecause they are business students, they all function well with straight "chalk and talk". I like to blend my delivery modes, breaking them into randomly selected groups for some activities, and also involving my colleagues in other areas (hospitality and horticulture) to arrange inerdividional activities, such as OHS inspections.
The pond is man-made and full of birdlife. It once had two of my students in it, falling in trying to retrieve a shoe they knocked in - in the middle of winter too!!

Our class number is usually 15, but this semester we have up to 26 students in one class. We have 2 Semesters, from Feb - July, and July - early Dec, as our summer holidays occur at Christmas time. Each semester is broekn into 2 terms - holidays the week after next for 2 weeks!! 2 weeks again in July and October. The summer break goes for 7 weeks approx.
Hi Beverley,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your response! What is there more than business division at the school you are working on? Is it common for you teachers collaborate to intergrera teaching?
Best Regards,
Gunbritt
Beautiful photo Beverley. Makes me want to be there.

It is a lovely campus, with lots of wildlife and wild flowers. West Coast Institue also provdies training in Sport and Recreation, Fitness, Nursing, Teacher Assistance, Aged and Child Care, Events, IT, Digital Technology, Metals Fabrication, Electrical, Hospitality, OHS, Management, Finance, Horticulture, Conservation and Land Management, Bricklaying, Carpentry and Automotive.
ReplyDeletethere is unfortunately very little collaboration. I am one of the few lecturers who has worked across the last 9 areas, but I am an exception rather than the rule. Many lecturers do not want to collaborate, probably bexuase they think other lecturers will judge them. This is known as a 'silo mentality', where each area operates independently.
